We are excited to be using our gallery space to showcase talented artists in our LOAM community.
For the month of November 2022 we have invited Helen Skerl.
Helen’s love of ceramics was sparked by attending the Ottawa Guild of Potters sales where she realized that this practical and lasting ancient technology of baking clay had a dual purpose of function and art. Surrounded by so much handmade work, she was inspired by the many possibilities of form and design.
Helen’s first pottery class was with continuing education at a local high school. Since then, she’s taken classes and been a studio member at various community centres in Ottawa. She has sold her work at the Picton Craft Sale, Nepean Visual Art Centre and LOAM where she is currently a studio member.
“Mugs, vases, butter dishes and bowls of many sizes and shapes all morph from a mound of malleable clay into satisfying, functional glazed vessels. My work is predominantly wheel thrown with stoneware. To decorate the surfaces of my pots I use brush strokes with complementary combinations of underglaze or add texture by carving or applying slip to convey movement.
Come by our gallery to see Helen's beautifully crafted work!
