Decorative Altering on the Wheel with Danièle Stewart

Ceramic artist, designer and instructor Danièle Stewart leads this dynamic hands-on workshop exploring various techniques for decorative altering on the wheel, including strategies for wheel trimming 'imperfect' forms.


About the Workshop

Many potters dream of throwing a perfectly round pot,drawn to the wheel precisely because of the symmetry it affords. Learning how to manipulate thrown forms out of round, however, opens a wide range of possibilities for technical growth and creative expression.

Visiting ceramic artist Danièle Stewart demonstrates decorative altering on both plastic and soft leather hard functional forms, expertly employing faceting, slip manipulation, altered rims, pinching, poking and darting techniques to enliven wheel-thown work. Students will be able to try out the techniqueswith Danièle's thoughtful feedback and guidance in the hands-on portion of the workshop


Workshop schedule

10:00am to 12:30pm- The morning block focuses onthrowing and altering demonstrations. Students will have time to begin throwing their own work with instructor support.

12:30 to 1:00pm - byo lunch break 

1:00 to 4:00pm - Demo highlighting optimal timing for various altering methods. Demo and strategies for wheel trimming 'imperfect' forms. Troubleshooting common altering challenges and supported practice time.

4:00 to 5:00pm - Independent practice, wrapping work and cleanup.

Note: Workshop pieces will be bisque-fired.LOAM studio members are encouraged to bring their own "inside studio" clay to work on and keep. Participants may purchase clay at LOAM. 

Ideal participantsare at an intermediate to advanced skill level.
