Late-Winter 2026 Beginner+ Wheel-y Tall

Instructor: Trish King
Duration: 6 Weeks | 2.5 Hours per Week                                                                  Intended Level:Beginner+ (we recommend a minimum one Wheel for Beginners classes or equivalent)

The taller they are, the harder they… collapse (until you learn how to keep them standing).

This 6-week course is designed for potters with a little wheel experience who are eager to throw taller, more confident forms. You’ll focus on mastering the foundation of vertical growth: steady hands, even walls, and the courage to cut through your work (a lot).

We’ll start with cylinders — the backbone of all great pots — then move into collaring necks and shaping elegant bottle forms. Once you’ve conquered height, you’ll learn how to trim and refine those tippy masterpieces using chucks and other custom supports.

The final class will focus on glazing techniques that complement tall forms and bring balance to their proportions. Expect to experiment, rebuild, and laugh a little along the way — you’ll likely make (and break) a lot, but walk away with a few proud, towering pieces that prove your progress.

You’ll Learn:

  • Techniques for pulling even, taller walls with control
  • How to collar necks and shape bottles
  • Strategies for trimming tall or narrow pieces
  • Chuck-making basics for stability
  • Simple glazing techniques for elongated forms
