Late-Winter 2026 Beginner + Throw, Trim, Decorate

Instructor: Jess Aylsworth
Duration: 6 Weeks | 2.5 Hours per Week                                                               Intended Level: Beginner+

Throw it, decorate it, love it — this class is where surface meets soul.

In this 6-week course, you’ll explore the art of surface decoration — the step that transforms a thrown pot into a personal statement. Guided by Jess Aylsworth, you’ll start on the wheel to create simple, balanced forms designed to act as the perfect canvas. From there, you’ll dive deep into surface design techniques that bring energy and character to your work.

You’ll learn how to combine wheel-thrown precision with decorative processes like sgraffito, resists, slip trailing, water etching, Mishima, and image transfers. You’ll also discuss which forms best support each technique, how to plan ahead while throwing, and how to layer multiple decoration methods for visual depth and storytelling.

Whether you’ve just started finding confidence on the wheel or are ready to explore new creative directions, this class offers a thoughtful balance between form and finish — for pots that are as expressive as they are functional.

You’ll Learn:

• Planning forms that complement surface techniques
• Sgraffito and Mishima linework
• Using paper and wax resists
• Slip trailing and water etching for texture and depth
• Image transfers and layering methods
• Finishing, glazing, and firing considerations for decorated surfaces
