Late-Winter 2026 Handbuilding: Sgraffito

Instructor: Jess Aylsworth
Duration: 6 Weeks | 2.5 Hours per Week                                                                  Intended Level: All Levels

Carve, colour, and create — slow down and let the surface tell the story.

In this six-week course, you’ll explore sgraffito, a traditional surface decorating technique that transforms simple clay forms into richly illustrated works of art. Using coloured slips and carving tools, you’ll learn how to layer, draw, and reveal designs that range from bold and graphic to intricate and delicate.

You’ll focus primarily on slab-built forms — perfect canvases for decoration — and explore how line, texture, and contrast can turn even the most minimal pieces into striking, personal works. The process is both meditative and deeply rewarding, combining technical precision with creative freedom.

Projects are tailored to your experience level: beginners will learn the foundations of sgraffito and slab construction, while returning students can dive deeper into complex compositions and multi-layered designs.

You’ll Learn:

• Slab-building techniques for functional and sculptural forms
• Applying and layering coloured slips
• Carving, incising, and linework for visual depth
• Planning and transferring designs to clay surfaces
• Finishing, glazing, and firing for sgraffito success
