Late-Winter 2026 Intro to Studio Practice

Duration: 6 Weeks | 2.5 Hours per Week                                                                  Intended Level: Wheel 2 or W2+ and Handbuilding Mixed Level (we recommend 1-2 classes at this level or equivalent)
Includes: one bag of clay and 6 additional open studio hours

Take the leap from learning to doing — and build the confidence to work independently.

This class bridges the gap between structured instruction and independent studio practice. You’ll refine your techniques and gain a deeper understanding of how to handle your work at every stage — from soft clay to finished glaze. With a balance of group demos and one-on-one feedback, your instructor will guide you in developing the habits, skills, and awareness needed to thrive in a shared studio.

Common “open studio challenges” — like cracked handles, too-wet or too-dry work, and glazing misfires — will be explored, explained, and demystified. You’ll also learn best practices for drying, wrapping, and managing your own work.

Students are encouraged to arrive with a specific project or goal in mind — whether that’s creating a matching set, tackling larger forms, or developing surface design techniques. This class is designed to help you gain independence, confidence, and readiness for Loam’s membership or DIY program.

You’ll Learn:

  • Refining wheel or handbuilding techniques
  • Managing moisture and timing at each stage
  • Studio workflow and best practices for independent work
  • Problem-solving common studio issues
  • Glazing strategies for consistency and success
