DECORATIVE ALTERING ON — AND OFF — THE WHEEL
July 11–12, 2026, from 10:00am – 5:00pm
Ceramic artist, designer, and instructor Danièle Stewart leads this dynamic hands-on weekend intensive. Across two days, students explore techniques for decorative altering on functional forms, from freshly thrown pieces to leather-hard work.
Many potters are drawn to the wheel for the symmetry it affords. Learning how to manipulate thrown forms out of round, however, opens up a wide range of possibilities for technical growth and creative expression.
Visiting ceramic artist Danièle Stewart demonstrates decorative altering on both plastic and soft leather-hard functional forms, using techniques such as faceting, slip manipulation, altered rims, pinching, poking, and darting to bring movement and character to wheel-thrown work.
Through demonstration and supported practice, students will explore how and when to alter forms for the strongest results. DAY 1 focuses on throwing and altering techniques on freshly made work, while DAY 2 shifts to refining and reinforcing alterations at the leather-hard stage, including strategies for trimming ‘imperfect’ forms.
Students will have the opportunity to try each technique with Danièle’s thoughtful feedback and guidance, building confidence in both process and execution.
