Wheel for Beginner Series: Mug Mania

Intended Level: Beginner

Mugs seem simple… until you try to make a really good one.

This 6-week course is all about exploring the endlessly specific, surprisingly obsessive world of mug making — from form and proportion to handles, attachments, comfort, balance, and finishing details.

Throughout the session, you’ll throw a wide variety of mug forms while experimenting with different approaches to shape, scale, rims, feet, and surface. Rather than laboring over a single perfect mug, this class encourages repetition, play, and exploration as a way to discover what forms and techniques feel most natural to you.

Expect fast-paced throwing exercises, handle deep-dives, refining techniques, and lots of side-by-side comparisons that help you develop both consistency and personal style.

Highlights may include:

  • rapid-fire mug throwing challenges
  • experimenting with different mug silhouettes and proportions
  • “Handle Monster” sessions dedicated entirely to pulling, shaping, attaching, and refining handles
  • learning how subtle adjustments affect comfort and function
  • trimming and finishing techniques that elevate everyday forms

Perfect for:

  • beginners wanting focused wheel practice
  • potters refining consistency
  • anyone who has ever become weirdly emotionally attached to a mug

By the end of the course, you’ll leave with a collection of functional handmade mugs and a much deeper understanding of what makes a mug feel really good to use
